An Open Letter

December 3, 2000

His Excellency K.H. ABDURRAHMAN WAHID
President
Republic of Indonesia

Your Excellency:

Assalamualaikum .wr.wb In behalf of the participants and organizers of the Asian and Latin American lawyers' Conference held from November 27 until December 2, 2000 in Jakarta, Indonesia, we would like to thank Your Excellency for having acceded to our request for an audience and provide us with an opportunity to personally bring to your attention our collective advocacy and the human rights situation, not only in Indonesia, but throughout the world as well.

We also appreciate the efforts made by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia in ensuring that human rights are protected and promoted. The lawyers and organizers of the said Conference believe that His Excellency's assurances, following their suggestions, of (1) consulting with other government agencies regarding the ratification of the United Nations' Draft Convention on the Protection of All Persons from Enforced or involuntary Disappearances; (2) inviting the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances perpetrated since the previous administrations up to the present; (3) putting into consideration the possibility of expanding the mandate of the National Commission on Human Rights are necessary steps in the proper direction. Rest assured that we will be in constant communication and collaboration with you in this regard.

Further, we would like to reiterate our recommendations for the government of Indonesia to sign and ratify the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Covenant on Economic , Social and Cultural Rights; to consider that human rights are universal and indivisible; to ratify the Rome Statute on the Establishment of the International Criminal Court; to strengthen the Indonesian judicial system; and to extend protection to persons involved in human rights work and advocacy.

We shall be furnishing you copies of the resolutions that were approved during the Conference. We hope that this will be the beginning of a lasting relationship in pursuit of social dignity and human rights.

In this we remain.

Respectfully yours
