India
Country Resolution to  Grant Mr. Parvez Imroz  a Renewed Passport and Ensure His Protection And Safety

Resolution

Whereas our Federation of human rights organizations directly working on the issue of enforced or involuntary disappearances in Asia is guided by the principles of mutual support and solidarity;

Whereas Mr. Parvez Imroz is a highly valued Council Member of the Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearances (AFAD) representing the member-organization Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) from Srinagar, Kashmir,

Whereas Mr. Imroz is a human rights lawyer and civil rights activists from Srinagar, Kashmir and has dedicated his life for the cause and campaign for human rights in the context of grave violations, including political killings, tortures and rapes and enforced disappearances with impunity;

Whereas Mr. Imroz’ great contribution more than just for the protection of human rights among his fellowmen but also for the advancement of the cause of human rights in the world has earned him the prestigious award of LUDOVIC-TRARIEUX INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS PRIZE given to him by the HUMAN RIGHTS INSTITUTES OF THE BAR OF BORDEAUX, BRUSSELS, PARIS and the EUROPEAN BAR HUMAN RIGHTS INSTITUTE in June 2, 2006;

Whereas Mr. Imroz has continued to receive threats to his very life and existence for the selfless causes that he has dedicated his life to;

Whereas the Indian government has curtailed his right to liberty, denying him his passport thereby restricting his freedom to travel abroad and prohibiting him from accepting his international award personally;

Therefore, we the participants in the Third Congress of the Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearances guided by the theme – “Coming Together: Forging a Global Respect for the Right Not to b Disappeared” held in Kathmandu, Nepal from December 16 to 18, 2006 RESOLVE, as it is hereby RESOLVED to strongly urge the Philippine government to undertake the following measures:

1. Recognize, respect and uphold the rights of every individual in the Jammu and Kashmir;
2. Ensure the protection and safety of Mr. Parvez Imroz;
3. Grant Mr. Parvez Imroz renewal of his passport;
4. Respect Mr. Parvez Imroz’s freedom to travel and participate in international functions.
