Remembering Munir
Words from Munir during the AFAD Second Congress,
August 26-30, 2004, Bangkok, Thailand.

Munir during the opening ceremony of
AFAD's Second Congress.
|
“The struggle against authoritarianism
is our struggle for the future, because without democracy, it is
impossible to protect people from involuntary disappearances.”
|
|
“It is important to join the struggle
against impunity and against the practice of involuntary disappearances,
not just for our own countries, but also for other countries. We have to
be in solidarity with other peoples who struggle for the same cause in
other countries…”

“For example, it is important for the
Philippines to be in solidarity with people in Kashmir. It is important
for the people in Indonesia to be in solidarity with the people in
Kashmir and so on. This type of work is very important because we cannot
struggle to stop the practice of involuntary disappearances in the
future without international solidarity.” |
|
“A very concrete example of
solidarity was AFAD members' collective efforts expressed in
synchronized pickets in front of the Indian Embassies in Jakarta, Hong
Kong, Colombo and other pressure tactics done a year ago.”
