“ If they are dead, tell us”!

My sons, where are they?

May 2003
Dearest Hong Kong comrades,

Hello! Only a few days later, here would come the unforgettable anniversary of June Fourth massacre. I know that your hearts are all linked tightly to the hearts of the victims and their families. Every year, you light up a candle and hold it in hand, gather together to mourn those innocent deaths. You really show to people in the world the determination and perseverance for freedom and democracy of Chinese people. To us, this is not only a comfort to our hearts but also is a spiritual courage.

Hong Kong has been originally a blessed land and has been well known for its prosperity. It has never before experienced those natural or human disasters, which many of our mainland comrades experienced within half of a century. It is originally good for Hong Kong being handed over to Mainland China in 1997. Unfortunately, it has not brought luck and fortune to people living on this piece of land. Instead, it is upsetting us as Hong Kong people have encountered waves of retreat of freedoms under the “one country, two systems” policy within only a few years. Moreover, not like before, you could no longer escape from the fate of experiencing nature disasters. As a matter of fact, Hong Kong was the first being affected by the outburst of the deadly disease SARS.

At this moment, my feeling is so complicated. I have been moved by your love but at the same time have been worried about your safety. The situation of SARS in Mainland China is still very serious while that in Hong Kong is still worrisome, as the jeopardy has not completely faded out. I am so worried about any big rally taken place might give a chance for SARS to prevail again. Therefore, I want to suggest that: to halt temporarily this year to hold any big June Fourth memorial rally. Instead, let us go online to mourn the victims of June Fourth. I think the deaths would know and be moved by what you do

I want also to tell my Hong Kong comrades that we did safely receive more than 1,700 condolence cards you sent last June to Tiananmen Mothers. I have already selected some of them to circulate them among mothers of the victims. I was asked to express our gratitude whole-heartedly to all those comrades who sent the cards.

Thank you for your long lasting sympathy and support given us all these fourteen years.

Wish you all the best and overcome the disaster safely.
